Bessie is bailing water from the large blue drums into the smaller buckets. One is for flushing the toilet, one is for washing your hands and one is for taking a bath. I pointed out to Bess that all the girls her age carried the water from the pump.
This is a bucket bath. We have a large flat plastic basin that we stand in. Then we put hot water from the fire and then bail in some cold water. I would add some surgical scrub (from our good friend Todd Barrett) to disinfect the water and keep the children from boils or infection.
Unfortunately, the only person to get a boil was me (Laura)! Problem - we only had 4 towels between 8 of us, everyone was sharing with someone else, which meant Paul had to use a t-shirt for a bath towel for three days!
I didn't get the boil from ENI, but on the 16 hour road trip - from sitting for so long in a hot, sweaty car. I did have an antibiotic to take from our ABC clinic thanks to Becky Epperson, who packed all kinds of medicines for our adventure.
It takes two to take a bucket bath. One to scrub with soap and a wash cloth, while another family member pours water from the bucket in a pitcher over our head to rinse off. It sounds rough, but in this tropical environment and nice cool bath at the end of the day is heavenly. A bath is luxury --whatever kind it is!
